When should I start looking for child care or a preschool program?

The sooner, the better, especially if you are looking for infant care. Many parents begin as soon as they know they are pregnant! Most facilities fill up quickly, so give yourself plenty of time to visit and compare. For preschool aged children, you should begin looking the September before you wish your child to attend. If a program is filled, ask to be put on a waiting list. And don't forget to ask when you can call back to check on your status.

What are the types of licensed child care?

There are three types of licensed providers for which the Department of Early Education & Care license sets rules for health, safety and staffing. A licensed provider should also help children learn and grow, and promote a good relationship between parent and child. Their current license must be posted.

Group Child Care or Center Based Programs: This license is for all center-based care for infants, toddlers, or preschoolers. Infant/Toddler; Nursery school; Head Start; Transition and private Kindergarten programs may offer half or full day programs.

Family Child Care: Care is given in a provider's home for up to six children including the provider's own children.

Large Family Child Care: This type of family child care allows for up to 10 children in the home of the provider with an approved assistant.

School Age Child Care: These programs are often called extended day or after school programs, and are open before and/or after school and/or during school vacations.

What's the best way to make my choice?

Visit programs and compare. The program and providers should make you feel comfortable with how she/he plans to keep your child safe, stimulated and well cared for. If for any reason during a visit you feel that something is just "not right," follow your instincts - only you can decide what is right for your child.

What should I consider when observing and talking to the people at a child care program?

When you visit, watch how caregivers interact with your child and other children. Do the teachers speak to the children in a calm, respectful and positive tone? There should be enough adults to work with a group and to care for individual children's needs. Ask questions of the director of the program. Do the children appear happy and actively engaged? Is the space comfortable and well equipped? Can the teacher/director explain what activities are offered and how they are designed to help children learn and develop? How can I judge the quality of the child care provider/program?

Visit the program. Look for the license. Ask as many questions as you need to and expect to get answers. Trust your instincts.
